Refund from Hotel

I recently booked a room with the xxxxx hotel in Manchester. Whilst making the booking the rate description given was "best available rate". I continued with the booking and received a conformation email. I was later sent an email from a comaprison web site offering me a better hotel in the city centre for less money so I decided to book that and cancel the xxxx, however I was charged for the full stay. I contacted the hotel and was rudley told that I had purchased an "advanced saver rate" therefore I am not entitled to a refund? I was not informed of this at booking stage and it clearly says on their web site how to cancel, nothing about advanced save rate. I checked the email I was sent and although it does say a cancellation would result in no refund the company's rest easy guarantee is displayed and directly below the non refund part I'm told if I wish to cancel I must do so by 12pm on the day of check in otherwise a no show will be charged the 1st nights stay? It makes no sense to charge for one night and refund part of my deposit if they do not offer refunds on the advanced saver rate? If anyone can advise please do as I lost my job recently and can't afford to pay out for two hotels. thanks, Jay.
