There has been a great deal of discussion about making whole areas, especially around schools, into 20-mile per hour speed limits. Yes, there should be lower limits in these areas but to make the whole streets and residential area 20 miles per hour is rather impractical and unenforceable. When we were in Queensland, we noticed that at certain times of the day, i.e. when school pupils were due to enter or leave the premises, a considerable length of the road outside the school was subject to a low speed limit, after which time traffic reverted to its normal speed. Excessive speeds were not used in any case and everyone adhered to the prescribed limits. When entering the 'school' area, there is a large notice giving details of the times at which speed must be reduced. Drivers do this without any problem and the children are safe. Why can't this system be implemented here? That way, danger around schools is reduced and drivers are not frustrated when the schools are not in use. Should the speed limit need to be monitored, it would be easier for police or similar to be at the school area at the appropriate time rather than appearing now and again and taking pot luck as to whether drivers stick to the limit or not, whether it be a school day or a weekend. Let's have things done on a 'need to be used' basis rather than generalising and having useless rules which don't benefit anyone.
