You Look Ugly
Hi there I read the story "You Look Ugly" and thought, why do these people say when they have lost loads of weight that and I quote from the article "I did this myself" when in actual fact they havn't, if it wasn't for the gastric band operation and a Tummy Tuck this woman and loads of others would still be big. A friend of mine paid for that operation as the N.H.S. wouldn't do it and freely admits that its only because you CAN'T EAT the same foods as before and the amount you used to eat, that thats why she is loosing weight. I am not trying to be horrible to her or any others but I think they should remember that without the operation they probably would be severly overweight. Kay

you look ugly
so what kay? every overweight person is ugly? i think not!! and not all overweight people are unfit either and while i agree that having a gastric band is not doing all the work yourself, if its the only option left then who are you to tell them they are ugly? id rather be ugly outside than inside like yourself

Hi I am really sorry but you have the absolute wrong end of the biggest stick ever. I didt mean for one minute that SHE was ugly I put that because thats what Take Break named the article and I linked it to that so people would know what I was talking about.
I myself am overweight and know to well how some people can be. I meant that without the operation as I know and many others its difficult to lose weight and the operation does help. For instance I love a Chinese takeaway for supper after a saturday night out, and as we all know thats not the best time to be eating a big meal, I was just saying that because of the operation you dont need the will power because you CANT eat it or you would be ill, thats all in fact I think she looks good. Believe it or not I am quite upset that you thought I meant that even though I dont know you and never will if you knew me you would know.

kay response
being overweight myself but also loosing weight(done 4 stone) got three to go, i totally understand where your coming from. I exercise down the gym four times a week and include swimming and eat horrible healthy stuff! and its very hard. The gastric band is not a food choice its a nessessity because you cant eat with that or you will be ill no will power involved but i understand that its the last chance saloon for some people who have no will power to loose the weight. All people are beutiful it just depends whos admiring you. totally agree with you kay and your comments.

gastric band / obesity
Hi All,
Like so many people these days my weight has spiralled out of control, this occurred after I had a hysterectomy and HRT treatment nearly 10 years ago, then I was diagnosed with an Underactive Thyroid condition also. Whilst I'm not trying to excuse myself this was the starting point of my problems. Un til then I had always been a happy size 14 - 16. Since then I have ballooned to a size 30 - 32. Apart from feeling ugly, it drastically affected my health.
I suffer from chronic pains in my hips, lower back and knee joints, I have high blood pressure and an enlarged heart. Consequently throwing myself a round a gym is out of the question.
I try to eat reasonably healthy, but do like take aways or going out for meals like anyone else does, and yes I often fail by binge eating when feeling stressed or depressed: thus making the problem worse.
After years of unsuccesful yo-yo dieting and joining well known slimming groups that charge a fortune for their classes and products I visited my GP. He gave me fat magnet tablets(Xenical) which induced daily bouts of severe diahorrea to "eject" the fat from my body.
Finally I have been referred for Gastric Banding on the NHS. I consider myself exteremly fortunate to be receving this as I could never have afforded the £10-15,000 cost myself. People have asked me why I don't feel bad costing the NHS this amount when more needier people could use it for other types of surgery. My reply is this if I didn't have it done, eventually my weight would kill me, also years down the line the cost of other medical treatments for high BP,diabetes, heartand bone problems etc would soon add up to a lot more than £10-15,000. SO from my own point of view prevention is better than cure.
I do not believe that just anyone should be able to have this or any other similar weight loss surgeries as a matter of course, becasue most peole can lose a few pounds or a stone. But when like myself you need to lose 10 stone or more to "rescue" my health and have spent years trying to lose it by other unsuccesful methods then I do not feel guilty at having the NHS cover the cost, as obese people are just as entitled to help as anyone else is.
